Interview with C. Gockel

Today I’ve got author C. Gockel here to answer a few questions about herself.  She’s an urban fantasy, paranormal, and sci-fi writer who has published eight novels, plus several shorter works, to date.  Her urban fantasy series is “I Bring the Fire” and her sci-fi series is the “Archangel Project.”

The first novel in her UF series “Wolves: I Bring the Fire Part 1” is currently free on all the major ebook retailers.  At the end of this post, you’ll find more details about it and links to where you can get your copy.  For now, check out my interview and the giveaway she’s offering for those who leave a comment.

What is your current country of residence? Have you visited other countries?

I live in Chicago, Illinois, in the USA–where most of my “earth-side” action takes place in my I Bring the Fire series. I’ve lived in Japan and visited Mexico, Canada, Scotland, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, England, Germany, France, and Austria. I haven’t travelled much since having kids; it might be part of why I write fantasy and sci-fi … simply for the escape!

What is your beverage of choice when you first wake up? What happens if you can’t get it?

Tea. You don’t want to know what happens if I don’t get my tea … even my children leave me alone on those days.

Do you have pets? If so, what kind and do they help you write your books?

At the moment, I have no pets, but I do have two children. They do help me write my books. I hand them an outline, put them in front of the computer screen and tell them they won’t get any iPad until they’ve written two-thousand words. Since the youngest is just learning to spell, it’s hard for her, but you know how the infinite monkey theorem says if you put a monkey in front of a keyboard for an infinite amount of time they’ll eventually write Shakespeare? Well, children are slightly more efficient and …
No, no, I don’t actually do that, and mostly when I type they wander in and say they’re hungry, or scream, “He’s looking at me!” and “Well, she is humming!”

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

Having a child. Having another.

Name a mystical creature you wish you could have as a pet.

I would like an Al-mi’raj–a ferocious, carnivorous, horned rabbit. If there are mystical creatures about, it must mean there’s been an apocalyptic event. I’d like a creature that can defend me, that wouldn’t terrify the kids, is smallish (we have a small house), and is most likely to be fatally underestimated by my enemies.

What would be your weapon of choice if society crumbled and it was each man/woman for them self?

I’d like the aforementioned Al-mi’raj. I’ve got two left feet and I’m horribly uncoordinated. A murderous bunny would be my best friend–err, as long as it was my best friend, and not just out to eat me.

What would be your ideal writing retreat?

Summer camp is my ideal writing retreat– summer camp for my kids, not for me. I get time to write, and time to enjoy my husband’s company and have an adult conversation, but at the end of the day, they come home.

Thanks for stopping by to visit today, C. Gockel.  You really have traveled around the world and love your idea for a mystical pet!

Gockel has been writing stories for her friends and family since the dark ages (i.e., before word processors existed.) A few years ago, she started posting those stories to the intertubes. She received emails, messages, and reviews from her fans telling her she should ‘do this professionally.’ She didn’t; because she is a coward and life as a digital designer, copywriter and coder is more dependable. But in the end, her husband’s nagging wore her down: “You could be the next ’50 Shades of Gray’ and I could retire!” Unfortunately, the author writes science fiction and fantasy, and isn’t particularly good at writing erotica. She is sad about this; she’d love for her husband to be able to retire and just work for her so she can nag him. At the moment, Ms. Gockel is working on the next installment of the Archangel Project.

  1. Hello C. Gockel, I enjoyed your interview ♡ Congratulations on the new baby! Wolves I bring the fire sounds awesome, looking forward to reading your books. And as for tea, the same goes for me. The only thing that gets between me and my tea in the morning is my two crazy cats as they have no patience and have me trained to feed them first! Thank you

    • Thank you for commenting. I hope you like Wolves!

“The only thing that gets between me and my tea in the morning is my two crazy cats as they have no patience and have me trained to feed them first! ”

Where are your priorities? Don’t you know who is the most important creatures in the house?

  2. I have read all the I Bring The Fire Books and love them, the characters, story development, just everything. The author even found a way to introduce Thor as a female that I was actually happy with.

  3. Hi C Gockel,
